Intermission, 2009 [details of installation: replica telephone in enamelled tinplate, cord, electromechanical device / overall dimensions: 50x200x20cm]
Using a hypnotic mechanism with a circular movement, the receiver of an old replica telephone rotates tirelessly just above the level of the spectator's gaze. The two broken ends of a snapped telephone line near one another but never join. The device emits a barely perceptible strident signal, like electricity during a blackout. Sensory perception is suspended, sunk into a moment of expectation which however promises no resolution. The installation is part of a progressive journey of discovery which sees the artist examine the ways in which sound, noise and their representation speak to us from outside their everyday context, pulling us into a process of circular reception which is closed and strongly symbolic.
